My new Hobby.
I've so much got into my cycling and found that over a short distance (10 miles) I'm reasonable quick. I was clocked by one of the local riders at 22 mph on my bike over a mile distance nd cover 9.4 miles in 30 minutes! Not bad for an old bloke. So I've madly entered the closed technical world of time trials.
Tight licra clothing, aero dynamic helmets and push bikes that are built to go quickly.
There's even a standard time for your age group to challenge you. Mines 28.45 minutes for 10 miles. The idea is to race over a set course on your own with a gap of 1 minute between cyclists. If you catch the guy in front the one who is caught must drop back 50 meters so as not to slip stream and be pulled along. I've not done one yet (7th May) so a little way to go. It all about you challenging the course and time not somebody else.

My 9kg bike is better to pick up than my 250kg bandit if it falls over. I do recon though that the manufacture's need to work on comfy saddles mind.

Re: My new Hobby.
Best of luck to you mate!
I prefer cycle touring, but I do like to get some speed up when out mountain biking and I like the thrill of the challenge of endurance rides. I should have been doing the Dyfi Winter Warm up tomorrow (just a 30 mile off road route) but have been off all week with a bad cold so wont be doing.
As for the lycra, I've worn it for years. Don't be self consious about it. Because surely you can't look this bad!!!

Well I'm glad my new hobby has brought so much fun and banter to people and left so little to the imagination of some.

Re: My new Hobby.
Well the summer of cycling was a blast. I injured a knee then pulled a quad so had to lay off training for several months and am only now getting back into riding when the summer ( if you can call it that) has almost finished.
I did manage to do 3 time trails over 10 miles on nthe local road course and came LAST in every race.
My first event I raced at No1 slot. About a mile and a half down the course No 2 passed me and rode off into the distance. At the finish he came up to me and enquiered how old I was. Then when I said my age he looked at me and said 'Your a youngster then, I'm 80' and walked away. Very embarassing.
A few weeks ago I manged to get my time down to 31.21. That works out at about 19 mph on a push bike!
I've also played cricket this summer in Division 5 of the Kent league 2nd XI. Managed to score 109 not out after years of trying to get 100 in this league. A life times ambission ticked off. I also was asked to play for Kent 50+ side which to me is a great honour.
So thats some of my life hobbies in 2012.......
Oh and I tried Sking in Norway back at Easter but I am pleased to tell you all, I'm a brick!

Hello,
When i was 17 i was riding 10 mile time trails at club and did a few comps too. my usual time was around 27 mins but i once did it in 24.32. i was shattered at the end, i used to ride my bike 6 miles to the meet and then race and ride 6 miles back..... i was rather fitter then than i am now. best of look to you. i'm sure you will enjoy it,
My aero helmet was painted up like Aliens head just for funsies...

Now.... I'm not pointing any fingers at anybody on here (cyclist myself) but I've seen a few instances of this up here.

Sad part is that quite a few of the lycra brigade must drive a car or ride a motorbike, but choose to be a danger on the road on a bicycle (whether by arrogance, ignorance or inexperience).
Come to think on it I'd look a perfect monstrosity in a lycra suit (giraffe in a condom springs to mind) )

Re: My new Hobby.
read that this morning, one of the guys in work fits so neatly into that description it's scary, only problem is he's only 31, just bought himself a 1300 note boardman carbon fibre bike, never ridden a road bike before, only ridden a mountain bike a few times (something else he spent a large amount on) .
he gets upset when you tell him money cant by you talent, i'll go for a spin with him in few weeks on 1 gear and toast him nicely.
as for TT, i've done a few in my time, normally 10 milers, I placed ok when i was younger getting in around the 25 mark quite often, managed a 23 which put me in the top 20. tempted to go back into it next year (can catch the last race of manchester district if i'm quick)
sod the lot of them wobbley, ride till you cant any more.

Re: My new Hobby.
Sadly a ruptured medial horn of my meniscus put pay to my cycling and cricket in 2014.
I managed 29.32 for 10 miles 3 days after the injury, rode in absolute pain for the whole ride. The TT bike is sat in the garage never to be ridden again. The same injury claimed by Kent league cricket and my place in the Kent 50+ squad. I did get injured in the semi final and was allowed to be 12th man in the HOme counties final that Kent beat Surry to be champions in 2014. I was also allowed to collect a winners medal which I am very proud of.
