Bike of the Month - Xmas Special 2011 - rf ro's Blue Betty
Posted: Mon Dec 19, 2011 8:53 pm
The bike started as a project RFOC trackday hack with people chipping in parts but after a disastrous start to 2011 I was forced to sell my shell suit 900 and the road project
bike was launched.
It all started back in November 2110 when rfrat offered a frame with v5 for nowt, so off I went. He also had a few extra bits
I managed to pick up some wheels and got a grab rail off ebay and I was ready for powder coating
More parts were acquired in Febuary including an engine from lucky martin
He also sorted out the exhaust headers and radiator not to mention the jelster for a seat.
So i had all the parts (or so i thought) and a date was set to start the build and ollie, jelster, fat rich and lucky martin turned up for a build, loaded up with all sorts of
RF bits and my favourite, the bag of nuts and bolts from martin. That bag saved my life so many times,
The engine went in with no problems but due to my oversight (that a 600 front end would fit a 900 frame) the build ground to a halt and we all got pissed instead ( thanks again guys it was a blast)
Over the next few months it began to take shape first the swing arm, new bushes and bearings
The bars went on
New head shock bearings
and all i needed was some forks and fat rich came to the rescue again
and after a polish
Progress was hampered by starting a new job for 6 days a week but on I went.
I got some new rubber
I love the maxxi diamonds, such a wicked profile
The fairing parts were sent off and in the spray shop
Got them back including some novo handy work
I fitted some flat indicators (tony v)
I also drilled a hole underneath to give access to the pilot light
Back to the bike and the final fixings go on, the rear suspension went in including all the linkage and drive sprocket bearings
So that was the rear end complete
The fork legs went on and front wheel
It was ready for it's cloths and a bike was reborn
It passed the MOT on the 1st August. The ride is superb and feels like a new bike. I have since got
wavys all round and a cute stubby
So there you have it a bike made of bits and bobs collected from friends and ebay. I would guess its cost around £2000 so more than it's worth but i wouldn't want anything
else as the feeling of riding something you built outweighs any cost/
I have learnt quite a few things during the journey which will help with the 2nd build
I would like to once again thank all the people that helped and sent me stuff. Without you lot it would of been a much harder build so thanks again and a Merry Xmas.
Watch this space for a very special rf900 next year
